A Celebration of Courage: Announcing the Children’s Cancer Association’s 2017 Heroes

A banner says, "Celebration of Courage" with a child giving a thumbs up.

On May 30, the Children’s Cancer Association (CCA) had the honor of presenting 12 incredible children and teens the title of CCA Hero at the Celebration of Courage. Their family, friends, and nurses gathered at OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) to celebrate the joy and strength that these heroes embody. It was a night to remember!

Presenting the 2017 CCA Heroes!

The Award Ceremony

Each of our 12 heroes received their very own medal presented by CCA’s President, Meg Byrtek, while FOX12’s Wayne Garcia shared their story. A heartfelt thank you to Wayne for attending as the event MC.

The Dove Release

After the awards, the heroes released a ceremonial dove representing hope, joy, and bravery.

SuperHEROES Have Fun

Our heroes were then invited to enjoy food and refreshments, play games, and create their own superhero outfit!

While the evening came and went in the blink of an eye, it is without a doubt that these kids and teens will leave a lasting impact on the community.

Thank You

A special thank you to Andrea Corradini on our Board of Directors for taking gorgeous photos of our heroes, which they are sure to cherish for years to come.

Thank you to these very special partners who made the night come together magically: OMSI, The Oregonian, OregonLive, Bonita Pioneer, Bon Appetit, and Portland Photography.

And last, but not least, thank you to our lovely community partners who provided each hero and their family with fun and free activities around Portland! Elmer’s Restaurants, Sunset Lanes, Pietro’s Pizza, KingPins, G6 Airpark, Portland Children’s Museum, Hillsboro Hops, and Academy Theater.

All Year Long

Be sure to check back often as we will continue to celebrate our Heroes over the year by featuring a different Hero each month. And remember, you can help us deliver joy to kids and teens just like our Heroes all year long by donating to the Children’s Cancer Association today.
