Purple-Out, a Spectacular Walk For Joy Kickoff, Coming Up October 2

A group of students all wearing purple cheer on a football team.

We were floored by the incredible showing from Central Catholic and Jesuit High School students during the varsity football game at Jesuit’s Cronin Field last Friday night. The two rival schools came together to make “Purple-Out” for the Children’s Cancer Association, a Walk for Joy kickoff event, a resounding success.

Tonight we are one team, we wear CCA purple, and together we help deliver human kindness to hundreds of thousands of kids battling cancer and serious illness.” – CCA’s Chief Joy Officer, Regina Ellis

The Purple-Out for CCA was a rally for both school communities ahead of Walk for Joy on October 2nd, in which students from Jesuit and Central Catholic will once again walk to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Association. This year students from St. Mary’s Academy and Valley Catholic will be joining in the walk and combined they hope to surpass last year’s record-breaking $40,000 fundraising total!

Jesuit Senior Tim Haarmann, a captain of Jesuit’s Walk for Joy fundraising team, started his freshman year as a patient at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital with a leukemia diagnosis. It was there he was inspired to walk 26 miles around the nurse’s station on his floor when he heard his fellow students were walking in the Portland Marathon in support of him and CCA.

During his illness, CCA served Tim through the MyMusicRx and Chemo Pal Mentor Programs. With his leukemia now in remission, Tim will be a featured speaker at CCA’s Wonderball Gala on September 24.
