Sunshine and Smiles Abound at the Second Annual Golf for Joy Challenge

A decade ago, Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club co-founder and dedicated Children’s Cancer Association (CCA) supporter, Gay Davis, challenged himself to play 100 holes to raise funds for CCA’s Joy-based programs.

Last week, Gay passed the baton to a new generation of golfers, who completed safe, socially distant, all-day golf-a-thons to create Joy for seriously ill kids, teens, and their families as part of CCA’s second-annual Golf for Joy challenge.

While some golfers chose to stage their golf-a-thons at their local golf club, the majority spent their day with CCA playing round after round on the Witch Hollow course at the prestigious Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club. In total, 35 golfers participated, raising an incredible $82,848 in critical funding for CCA and the thousands of seriously ill kids who find emotional well-being through our JoyRx programs.

Above and Beyond

We’d like to recognize a few golfers who went the extra mile (literally) during their golf-a-thon:

Most Inspiring Golfer: Seth Finnie!

CCA-served teen, Seth Finnie (left), finished treatment just one week before the event—but that didn’t stop him from playing 45 holes.

Most Money Raised: Team Lee!

Jennie Lee, former LPGA golfer and Merchandising Operations Manager at Nike, and Eunice Lee, Strategy Manager at Nike, played 72 holes each and raised nearly $12,000 for JoyRx.

The 100+ Club: Kevin Mathis, Tom Mueller, Jon Olson, & Christopher Smith

Kevin Mathis, Head Golf Pro at Lake Oswego Country Club, golfed from sun-up to sunset (literally) to achieve his goal of playing 144 holes!

Tom Mueller, PGA Golf Pro at Lake Oswego Public Golf Course, played an impressive 101 holes!

Longtime Intel employee, Jon Olson, also played an incredible 101 holes!

Christopher Smith, PGA Teaching Professional and Director of Instruction at Eugene Country Club, walked an astounding 100 holes!

Thank You!

We are deeply grateful to our golfers and their friends and family for their passion and generosity; our title sponsor Portland Gear and in-kind sponsors Black Rock Coffee Bar and Rose City Distilling for providing snacks, refreshments, and CCA swag to participants; and to Gay Davis and the kind folks at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club for making our Golf for Joy challenge a swinging success!
