Hoops and Holidays with Meyers Leonard
At the Children’s Cancer Association (CCA), we are filled with gratitude for our incredibly passionate community of supporters in the Portland area. There’s no shortage of people who truly believe that joy matters, especially to seriously ill children and teens.
Portland Trail Blazer, Meyers Leonard, and his wife Elle are one such example! In the past, Meyers has offered individual meet-and-greets to children and even stopped on the court to say hello to the CCA-served kids watching a game.
Block Out Cancer
In 2012, Meyers helped launch the Blazers’ Block Out Cancer program with Genentech, in which every shot a Trail Blazer blocks, Genentech donates $25 to CCA. In the last eight years the Block Shot Program has raised over $120,000 for CCA programs!
Meyers has been the official spokesperson of Block Out Cancer since it started, but this holiday season, he was interested in doing more for CCA-served families.
A Slam Dunk
This year, in addition to sponsoring a CCA family for our Link Program’s Hope for the Holidays, Meyers and his wife Elle hosted a holiday party for six CCA families. The event included a tour of the practice facility, dinner, games, cookie decorating, and of course, an opportunity to shoot hoops with Meyers.
“Looking back, this CCA holiday event was pure magic. The children were like beams of light that fill you with so much joy. Hearing how they have been fighting FOR YEARS and surpassing all odds/timelines was an incredible reminder that there’s always hope. Personally, I couldn’t help but think about how these kids have gone through the hardest childhoods one can imagine. Yet, they live with so much more life than you can fathom,” said Elle Leonard.
Our sincere thanks to the Leonard family for your continued support, going above and beyond this holiday season, and believing joy matters. Additionally, thanks to Bruce Ely for capturing so many special moments!
