Local musicians bring joy to young patients

St. David’s Children’s Hospital is helping patients heal with the power of music. The north Austin hospital partnered with MyMusicRx, to bring local Austin musicians to the hospital and play for children.  The volunteers are all specially trained to learn music medicine techniques, depending on a child’s mood and needs. “Our specialists play music, the often will even teach lessons,” said Abby Guyer, vice president of brand for Children’s Cancer Association, “and the notion is that kids get to be in charge of the interaction. so we like to say its kid-prescribed rather than doctor-prescribed.”

Music from SXSW made a stop at Dell Children’s Hospital on Thursday! It’s the sixth year for MyMusicRX to partner with Dell Children’s for the music event where musicians play in the courtyard at the hospital for any patient who wants to listen.

“MyMusicRX brings joy to children that are in the hospital and not able to experience the things that other kids are able to enjoy,” said Sarah Marshall with the MyMusicRX Austin Champions Board, “It’s just a break from the medications, a break from the treatments, just a time to laugh and have fun.”

CCA + Legacy: Collaborative study looks to decrease pain and anxiety in children with live music post-surgery

“Most of the published work on the effects of music in patients involves adults,” said R. Serene Perkins, MD, Director of Surgical and Clinical Research, Legacy Research Institute. “Assessing and managing pain and anxiety in children is more difficult, which is what led us to explore the impact of music medicine in a pilot group of hospitalized children. We believe there is a critical gap in pediatric oncology research: understanding the role of integrative therapies to combat the adverse effects of stress on pediatric patients.”
