Continuously surprising and astounding us with their generosity, volunteers are the backbone of the Children’s Cancer Association (CCA), helping our programs to run smoothly and providing top-notch event experiences. They’re also a reminder for kids and families who have had their lives turned upside-down by serious illness that the community is here for them. Today we’re spotlighting an amazing Chemo Pal Mentor Program Intern.

Meet Sarah

Sarah Peterson loves hiking, reading, and hanging out with her pug, Ruby. A former intern with the Chemo Pal Mentor Program and also a social work major from the University of Portland. Social work seemed a natural choice to her because of the opportunity to support people through a difficult time in their life.

“When I was 12 my dad died of cancer, and it was really hard, but that will make me a better social worker. I understand that you can go through hardship and come out more resilient. I want to help people who feel like no one is in their corner. I want them to feel supported and know that they can make positive changes in their lives.

Social work is walking hand and hand with people, realizing that they’re the expert in their own lives and you’re there to help them do what they want and make the best of it.”

More Than Just an Experience with Cancer

While Sarah knew social work was a worthy career, she also wanted to gain experience from a worthy cause. That’s when she found the CCA.

“I found out the hard way how horrible cancer is and how much help people really need. My family was lucky we had a lot of support, but not everyone has that, so it’s important that through CCA the community is taking an interest in these kids.

I know from experience that people are there at the beginning of a diagnosis and very invested, but over time everyone gets busy and drops off, and these kids still need support. It’s important for kids to be kids and I like that CCA acknowledges that and recognizes that these kids are more than just their experience with cancer.”

Making A Match

Despite the serious work she’s doing, Sarah has found a deep sense of satisfaction with her career choice and time spent at CCA. She even oversaw three of her own Chemo Pal matches, her favorite part of the job.

“Before this internship, I didn’t have any case management experience. It’s been a learning experience and I’ve gotten some good feedback from the Chemo Pal Specialists.

I had three of my own matches. I love the initial match meeting when the kid gets toys and is super excited. In one of my matches, the mentor and Chemo Pal were playing with a ball in the hallway and I immediately saw the potential for this to have a huge positive impact on the kid and on the family, it was a great moment for everyone.”

Beyond CCA

Sarah’s internship ended at CCA, but if her time here is any indication of her future, we know that she’s going to do great things! Thank you Sarah for all your amazing work and best of luck.
